Eric Bellis

Born on 10th July 1946 in Wallasey, Merseyside.  Studied painting at Wallasey School of Arts and Crafts.

First exhibited in 1967 at Stratford Upon Avon exhibition entitled 'Three Northern Painters in Stratford'.  Exhibited in several commercial galleries in the Cotswold area over the next few years.

1969-1973 he lived in North Wales, exhibiting in Manchester and Liverpool Academy mixed shows, Pictures for Welsh Schools in Cardiff, and with the 'Free Painters and Sculptors' at the FBA Galleries.

1973-1979 worked as a Designer/ Exhibition Officer for NW Museum and Art Gallery Service.

1979- 1982 Head of Design and Production for Bristol Museum and Art Gallery.  Met the marine artist Robert Moore who re-stimulated  his interest in producing paintings.  Left permanent employment to concentrate on painting.

"My painting of farm animals, domestic animals, and children in fantasy settings are a result of my enthusiasm for Primitive or Folk Art of 19th century Britain and America.  There is a certain element of magic in those paintings which I try to evoke and take a stage further in an attempt to achieve a timeless quality.  Some paintings are concerned with particular rare or old breeds of animal (my knowledge of pigs stems from childhood when a great deal of time was spent on my uncle's pig farm in Cheshire), whilst others are simply about atmosphere, form, and colour with a touch of humour in the subject matter."
