Helen
Rhodes
The
popularity of Helen's work stems from the unique combination of simple yet
familiar images, naive humour and an intense richness of colour, texture and
pattern. Helen is fascinated by the
history of textile design, especially the costume and imagery of the Elizabethan
period. The ripped edges hint that
each image is a fragment of a larger painting, giving an element of preciousness
to each piece. The richness of
Helen's work is achieved through the layering of paint and extra depth is given
by the final layer of varnish. Helen
was delighted to be commissioned by 'Queen's Bone China' to produce six mug
designs. In 1994 and 1995 Helen won
the Imperial Cancer Research Christmas Card competition, this encouraged her to
produce more images for the greeting card market. The cards produced have been highly successful and are
distributed world-wide. Interest in
her artwork led Helen to produce new work for publication as limited editions.
This young artist's original artwork is already highly sought after and
with rapidly increasing demand it is inevitable that more published limited
editions will follow.

Helen
is a graduate of Loughborough College of Art and Design, holding a First Class
Degree in Textiles.
