Robert Littleford, FRSA, BWS
Northern artist
Robert Littleford was born in 1940. His origins are not from those
normally associated with great artists, both his parents being poorly paid
cotton workers.
It was not until Robert Littleford was
in his mid-twenties, when glancing one day into a gallery window, that he
noticed a painting of the moon over the ocean. It was an inspiration that
was immediate and long lasting. From this sprang a passion that was soon
to occupy all his spare time and in 1971 he made the decision to become a
professional artist. Robert Littleford’s first exhibition was held at Salford
Art Gallery
and was a resounding success attracting the attention of art critics and
national television.
Following many more
successful exhibitions Robert Littleford was delighted, in 1986 to be made a
member of the prestigious British Watercolour Society. His work has also
been exhibited at the Royal Society of Artists.
Robert Littleford
attempts to convey not a deep socially significant or symbolic message, but
merely something he has seen and admired. His interest is derived
primarily from light and shade, brightness and shadow. Where most
paintings need to be viewed in the light to illuminate them, Robert
Littleford's paintings illuminate the room in the most miraculous way. He
attempts to show the viewer as truthfully as possible, what it was that
inspired him to sit down and paint.
