Ross Gee
Born in Hale Barns, England on the 24th
of June 1965, Ross Gee displayed a natural talent for the arts at a very
young age. As a young boy, he can remember having a passion for art and
spending much of his childhood drawing, specifically sketching animals. His
love for art extended from drawing to an infatuation with art history books.
Gee, captivated with the fascinating art history books, studied the old
masters such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. In addition to the great
masters, Ross Gee found great inspiration from his mother and father, who
were also great art enthusiasts.
Later, after going
to Stockport College of Art and Design for four years, Gee started using his
art background in the illustration field. This work extended from colourful
characters for cereal boxes,
to scientific medical charts used by physicians.
Today, the artist resides in Stockport, England and is pursuing his
enthusiasm for painting, moving away from the more commercial art to fine
art. Working primarily in oils, Gee’s paintings display a vibrant
impressionistic style that, as he puts it, “makes no excuses for what it
is.” About his work, he reflects that the “magic part” to him is the skill
to stand up close to the canvas and see dabs and splashes of colour, but
then, stepping back, to see a picture.
Pulsating hues of paint are juxtaposed against a dark night sky, capturing a
thrilling street scene in one of his paintings. Gee looks to the world
around him for inspiration, finding beauty in city lights, blasts of
colours, and reflections bouncing from buildings. Everywhere Gee looks, he
sees a picture and is constantly taking snap-shots in his mind.
In many of his
paintings, Manchester, England is a major source for inspiration and is
often the subject in his work, bringing the city to life with his energetic
style. In his rendering
the viewer
can catch a glimpse of the vision behind Gee’s “mental snap-shots” he takes
when observing the lively world around him. Gee is one of the few
contemporary masters of traditional painting and at the top of many
collectors “hot” list.
