Sir Peter Blake

Painter of urban realist subjects and Godfather of British 'Pop Art'.

Sir Peter Blake's work crosses all generational divides, and inspires great respect from younger artists such as Damian Hirst, Gavin Turk, Pure Evil and Tracey Emin. Knighted in 2002, an honorary doctor of the Royal College of Art, and with his work represented in major collections throughout the world, Sir Peter Blake truly is a grandee of British Art.

Sir Peter Blake's work reflects his fascination with all streams of popular culture, and the beauty to be found in everyday objects and surroundings. Many of his works feature found printed materials such as photographs, comic strips or advertising texts, combined with bold geometric patterns and the use of primary colours. The works perfectly capture the effervescent and optimistic ethos of the sixties, but are also strikingly fresh and contemporary. There is also a strain of sentimentality and nostalgia running throughout his work, with particular focus towards childhood innocence and reminiscence, as can be seen clearly in his recent Alphabet series. Blake is renowned for his connection with the music industry, having produced iconic album covers for the Beatles, Paul Weller, The Who, and Oasis.

Peter Blake was born on the 25th June 1932 in Dartford, Kent, into a lower-middle class family. Following the outbreak of World War II, Blake was evacuated from his hometown. This coupled with the wartime rationing of resources and economic downturn had a large effect on Blake's later work. From 1951 to 1953 he served in the Royal Air Force.

Following his time in the national service, Blake studied at the Gravesend School of Art between 1948 to 1951 and then the Royal College of Art from 1953 to 1956, where he won the Leverhulme Research award to study popular art. His contemporaries at the Royal College of Art included Bridget Riley and Frank Auerbach. Sir Peter Blake graduated in 1956, He went on to teach at St Martin's School of Art, London (1960-1962), Harrow School of Art (1960-63), Walthamstow School of Art (1961-64) and at the Royal College of Art (1964-76).

During the late 1950s, Blake became one of the best known British pop artists. His paintings from this time included imagery from advertisements, music hall entertainment, and wrestlers, often including collaged elements. He first came to public attention when he featured in Ken Russell's film on pop art, Pop Goes the Easel, which was broadcast on BBC television.

Blake also painted several notable album sleeves. As well as the sleeve for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Blake also made sleeves for the Band Aid single, "Do They Know It's Christmas?" (1984), Paul Weller's Stanley Road (1995) and the Ian Dury tribute album Brand New Boots and Panties (2001). He also designed the sleeve for The Who's Face Dances (1981), which features portraits of the band by a number of artists. And in 2006 he created the cover for the Oasis album Stop The Clocks.

Blake was made a Royal Academician in 1981, a CBE in 1983, and in 2002 was knighted.
