Timothy Perks

Tim Studied ceramics at Stafford Art College from 1979-1983, completing it with a first class honours in Ceramic Tableware Design. During the early part of his career he worked for companies such as Spode, Staffordshire Potteries and Wedgwood, designing and developing ceramics.

As time progressed he wanted to get more involved with figurative sculpture, so over a period he practised and taught himself to clay sculpt to the high standard required by companies such as Royal Worcester, Coalport China and Lenox China in the USA. Once established in this new specialized field he earned a living for a number of years working as a free-lancer with these companies.

As the industry declined as many have, he was offered a partnership with other creative’s in a small design led pottery, based in Stoke-on-Trent. Although it was good to be part of a team with a common goal he eventually found it sculpturally restrictive.

He now enjoys complete creative freedom to express himself using the medium he loves and knows so well.

Tim on his work

“I sculpt the female form because of its sensual beauty, elegance and strength. I prefer slightly unusual poses, or snap shot compositions that challenge traditional preconceptions of figurative art.

Working with clay is something I have always done since childhood. I enjoy the notion of being faced with an inanimate block of clay, much like a blank piece of paper for an author, sculpting and working it into something with life, a recognisable form.

Once the initial sculpture is complete, I make a one off mould of it, I then hand press each piece of the edition.

Some pieces I decorate with gold leaf to create a contrast to the earthly texture of the unglazed ceramic, I also wind sterling silver band around the piece to adorn and give another dimension.

The vivid colours and markings I hand paint on some work, is intended to intrigue. I enjoy mixing species, contemplating our frail evolutionary path and imagining the myriad of possible outcomes that could have been.”
